Questo perché la didattica di questo strumento è costruita a partire dal pizzicato, una tecnica che arriva dal contrabbasso e significa proprio suonare pizzicare le corde con i polpastrelli. Va anche detto che generalmente il plettro è associato a chi suona il basso senza una grande tecnica. Nell’immaginario medio il bassista di un gruppo punk (genere per il quale non serve certo essere dei virtuosi) suona con la tracolla che fa arrivare il basso sulle ginocchia e il plettro. È anche vero che i più grandi bassisti, vedi Jaco Pastorius o Flea suonano con le dita. Ma la risposta che diamo noi è: vanno bene entrambi! Perché devo scegliere il plettro o le dita?
Questa domanda sarà il fulcro della tua scelta, infatti decidere tra uno di questi “mezzi” ti aiuterà a individuare “il suono che stai cercando”. Nello specifico, se sei un bassista heavy metal, forse il plettro può essere più adatto al tuo stile. A meno che tu non sia Steve Harris degli Iron Maiden. Se invece suoni soprattutto funk, allora forse è meglio diventare un mago del fingerstyle. Ma si potrebbero fare tantissimi altri esempi e, a volte, gli esempi che ho appena fatto potrebbero risultare non validi. Esistono, infatti, brani heavy metal che rendono di più se suonati con le dita e altri funk che è meglio suonare col plettro. Non è solo una questione di genere, quindi, la scelta può variare da pezzo a pezzo.
Sono un chitarrista e sono già abituato al plettro
Molti chitarristi che si “convertono” al basso tendono a rifiutare categoricamente l’uso delle dita. Alcuni di loro non posso biasimarli, anche perché magari si ritrovano a suonare il basso solo per “emergenza” in un piccolo periodo di tempo e, quindi, non hanno il tempo materiale per abituarsi a un nuovo tipo di approccio. Comprendo meno invece chi rifiuta le dita solo per “poca pazienza”. Se il suono che stai cercando è lontano da quello che riesci a produrre con il plettro, meglio sforzarsi un po’. L’esercizio è la chiave per imparare al meglio uno strumento, ma anche per individuare il suono migliore possibile. Non importa se saranno necessari mesi per abituarsi: alla fine di questo “percorso” sarai in grado di utilizzare senza problemi le dita o il plettro, a seconda delle tue esigenze.
Altre tecniche
In alcuni casi è più semplice imparare alcune tecniche se hai già una certa abitudine all’uso delle dita. La più famosa è sicuramente lo slap: una tecnica molto nota tra i bassisti che consiste nel percuotere con il pollice e tirare con la mano destra (se non sei mancino) le corde in modo da produrre un effetto che esalta al massimo la funzione ritmica del basso. D’altro canto, se ami stili di musica che prevedono un’esecuzione “ad alta velocità” potresti essere quasi costretto ad “aiutarti” con il plettro. Non è impossibile sviluppare la stessa rapidità anche con l’ausilio delle dita, ma è necessario davvero tanto esercizio. Riguardo il plettro, puoi ottenere un sound diverso a seconda dello spessore. Ti consiglio di sperimentarne diversi così da trovare quello più adatto alle tue esigenze. Ribadiamo, quindi, che non esiste una “strada giusta” per suonare al meglio il basso. La cosa migliore da fare è imparare a utilizzare indistintamente entrambe le tecniche. L’equazione è semplice: se il sound col plettro ti soddisfa, allora avrai preso la scelta giusta.
